I Got Stuck Installing a Tool… Just to Calculate GC Content

What should have taken 10 seconds turned into hours of setup and made me rethink how bioinformatics

I had a DNA sequence. I just wanted the GC content.

That’s it.

Instead, I found myself…

Installing packages I didn’t fully understand. Fixing dependency issues I didn’t create. Switching between tools that didn’t quite do what I needed.

At some point, I stopped and thought:

“Why is something this simple… this complicated?”

The Friction No One Talks About

I wasn’t building a pipeline. I wasn’t running large-scale analysis.

I just needed a quick answer.

But bioinformatics tools don’t seem designed for that.

They’re built for power. Not for simplicity.

And then there was another problem.

Some tools worked online.

But that meant uploading sequences to external servers.

If you’re working with unpublished data… that’s not a small decision.

That Moment Changed Something

It wasn’t just frustration.

It was a realization.

The problem wasn’t the tools themselves.

It was the friction.

The Pattern You’ve Probably Experienced Too

If you’ve worked with sequence data, you’ve likely been here:

You don’t need a cluster. You don’t need a full pipeline.

You just want to:

  • Check a sequence
  • Find an ORF
  • Convert FASTA
  • Do something simple

But instead…

You end up spending more time setting up tools than actually using them.

The Bigger Problem in Bioinformatics

Most tools fall into two extremes:

1. Too heavy

They require:

  • Installation
  • Command-line knowledge
  • Environment setup

2. Too risky

They:

  • Upload your data somewhere
  • Offer little transparency
  • Raise privacy concerns

And neither is ideal when you just need quick, reliable answers.

So I Tried Something Different

Instead of searching for better tools…

I asked a different question:

Why can’t this just run in the browser?

No installs. No uploads. No friction.

What Started as a Small Experiment

I began building small tools for myself:

A GC content calculator. A FASTA utility. An ORF finder.

Nothing fancy.

Just tools that worked instantly.

But something unexpected happened.

I started using them all the time.

Because they removed the one thing that kept slowing me down:

friction.

It Turned Into This

A collection of simple, browser-based bioinformatics tools that:

  • Run entirely client-side
  • Don’t require installation
  • Keep your data private
  • Work instantly

No setup. No waiting. No unnecessary complexity.

Why This Actually Matters

At first, this felt like a small improvement.

But it changed how I work:

  • No setup → faster iteration
  • No uploads → safer workflows
  • No friction → more focus on actual analysis

And honestly…

That’s what tools should do.

When This Approach Is Useful

This isn’t meant to replace full pipelines.

But it’s incredibly useful for:

  • Quick sequence checks
  • Teaching bioinformatics concepts
  • Exploring ideas before deeper analysis
  • Working with sensitive or unpublished data

A Small Shift That Makes a Big Difference

Bioinformatics often feels more complicated than it needs to be.

But not everything has to be.

Sometimes, the biggest improvement isn’t more power.

It’s less friction.

Try It Yourself

Final Thought

We spend so much time optimizing pipelines…

Maybe we should also optimize simplicity.

Because the best tools aren’t the most powerful ones.

They’re the ones that get out of your way.
